Judgement XX The World XXI Much of the original symbols have been retained – but what makes this deck different from other Marseilles reconstructions and clones are the costumes of its people and their familiar modern dress. Instead of crowns, they wear baseball caps or berets. Justice wears the judicial wig, the King of Coins wears a suit and tie, the Cavalier of Batons wears a cowboy outfit, the Valet of Swords looks like a drill sergeant, the Valet of Batons looks like a builder or construction manager; he wears a hard-hat and ear protection, and the Cavalier of Coins is dressed in formal English riding wear and is dressed for dressage – most appropriate for this card as it’s a very controlled and precise sport!
My personal favourite cards not only for their dress are the Hermit, a wise old teacher with a steadfast expression and half-smile, the Ace of Wands such fabulous colouring , and Strength’s calmness.
The first card in Bembo’s Visconti Sforza tarot is the Magician. Bembo’s dramatically red-dressed character is seated on a paneled cube placed on a green ground surface at a trestle table bearing a cup, two round shapes and a knife.
Symbolism[ edit ] In ecclesiastical and formal government ceremonial , special officials may carry a wand of office or staff of office representing their power. Compare in this context the function of the ceremonial mace , the sceptre , and the staff of office. Its age may be even greater, as Stone Age cave paintings show figures holding sticks, which may be symbolic representations of their power.
The ‘wand’ survived for a time under the Normans. Then when the yard was established, the wand came to be known as the ‘yard and the hand’, and then disappeared, either slowly or by being banned by law. The old English unit of mm was called a ‘wand’, and although the ‘yard’ was created to replace the wand, the wand was still used for some centuries because of its convenience as part of an old English decimal system that included:

May 12, A guest post shared by Cassandra. The Magician Magic, luck, creation …these are just a few keywords often ascribed to The Magician—1. The Magician represents being able to use the skills and resources at your disposal to create change in your life and the world at large. Delving a little deeper, this card also indicates creating through the law of attraction the life you desire.
Today during a tarot reading the Magician tarot card was drawn. For whatever reason, the card took on more clarity and it’s importance, particularly these days, seemed to stand out. I felt an impulse to provide some general information about this unique tarot card to others and here we are.
Each card is a beeswax encaustic collage that incorporates antique tarot cards as well as vintage photographs. There is more information about the deck here. Original Encaustic Beeswax Collage: Encaustic painting is a technique dating back to Greece in the fifth century BCE. Encaustic medium consists of a mixture of natural beeswax and damar resin crystallized tree sap.
The medium is melted and applied with a brush or other tool. After it cools, each layer is reheated to fuse it to the previous layer. My Process I begin by applying a digital sepia tone to the images I will be using in the collage. I print the images out, distress them with sandpaper and other tools, and hand-color them with watercolor or colored pencils.
I create the layers of the collage, applying a layer of beeswax medium each time, scraping and incising each layer to create texture. I work in color with oil paints, oil pastels, gold leaf, and gold foil between the layers of beeswax medium. I fell in love with beeswax collage work for its luminous transparency and the mystery that unfolds as each piece is created. Care These collages are extremely archival, but as with any fine art, care should be given to them.
There should be no fear of the work melting in normal household conditions.

Reconstruced maxilla from microCT images. Gerhard Weber, University of Vienna, Austria The archaeological evidence reveals that the inhabitants of Misliya Cave were capable hunters of large game species, controlled the production of fire and were associated with an Early Middle Paleolithic stone tool kit, similar to that found with the earliest modern humans in Africa.
While older fossils of modern humans have been found in Africa, the timing and routes of modern human migration out of Africa are key issues for understanding the evolution of our own species, said the researchers. The region of the Middle East represents a major corridor for hominin migrations during the Pleistocene and has been occupied at different times by both modern humans and Neandertals.
The Two of Swords represents indecisiveness, being held back by fear, and withholding our true thoughts and feelings. Feeling like we’re trapped is a part of human nature.

Not seeing anywhere ideal to post this, I think this will do. I first saw this deck, and thought aww cute! But now i’m seeing that this deck is meaning much more to me. For a start, as soon as I opened this deck on christmas day, I was in awe of the cards, the detail and the hours of devotion to the deck and book.
I think its really shows that Anne wrote the book and painted the pictures, it gives the 2 a real sense of connectedness. Although I love Rachel Pollock, her books are so wordy and like seeing a card as a ‘crime scene’ putting all the clues together, but theres so much work to be done individually with this deck its just wonderful.

Visconti-Sforza Tarot Reviews
Etymology[ edit ] The word tarot and German Tarock derive from the Italian tarocchi, the origin of which is uncertain. One theory relates to the Taro River in northern Italy; the game may have originated in Milan or Bologna. These suits were very similar to modern tarot divination decks and are still used in traditional Italian , Spanish and Portuguese playing card decks. These new decks were called carte da trionfi, triumph cards, and the additional cards known simply as trionfi , which became “trumps” in English.
These cards are documented in a written statement in the court records in Florence , in The oldest surviving tarot cards are from fifteen decks painted in the mid 15th century for the Visconti-Sforza family, the rulers of Milan.
The tarot deck featured is the Wildwood Tarot, a deck in which almost all cards are renamed (though it still follows the usual tarot system). The calendar and datebook are the Earth Pathways diaries.
Review by Lloyd R. Atanassov, but it is the Visconti Sforza Pierpoint Morgan truly sets the standards and the origin of the past and present tarot cards. There is no wishful thinking of so-called Occultic mysteries and attempts to find shallow relevances to Egyptian, Indian, Gypsy-Atlantean tradition etc. These cards were the first “official” tarot card deck made, and it sets the standard and the original look of our modern decks. They were made NOT for divination or mystical goals, but for simple gambling.
Not to be confused with the French Gringonneur deck of playing cards at the court of Charles in These beautiful cards are larger than the size of our modern tarot, simply because the medieval necessity of fancy decorations sorrounded that weighs more than convenient shuffling. A hole has been punched in all cards, and two of the cards Tower and Devil were added in the modern reproduction.
However, it is quite possible that both missing cards were never there in the first place, due to the religious and political controversy that surrounds these gambling cards. By taking historically comparing these late 15th century cards to modern cards, one is able to appreciate the beauty and changes in detail that has been embedded in many of our modern tarot cards.
